KUCHING: Malaysia’s Jeneath Wong has made history by winning the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) Championship, becoming the first Malaysian golfer to claim the coveted title last Sunday.
The tournament, held at Hoiana Shores Golf Club, saw Wong deliver a dominant performance, finishing with a record-breaking 18-under-par (266) after rounds of 65, 69, 64, and 68.
In a social media post following her victory, the 20-year old golfer expressed gratitude for the support she received: “A dream come true! Thank you @waapgolf @therandagolf @apgcgolf for making this event so special.
“Thank you @malaysiangolfassociation for giving me this opportunity to be the first Malaysian to win this tournament and my amazing teammates for making these memories a lifetime,” Wong concluded in the post.
Her victory grants her exemptions into three major championships in 2025 — the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl, Wales, The Chevron Championship in Texas, and The Amundi Evian Championship in France.
Wong’s win at the WAAP adds to her already impressive golf career. She previously competed in the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, as well as securing an individual bronze and team silver for Malaysia at the 2022 Southeast Asian Games.
At just 20 years old, Wong’s victory at the WAAP marks a significant step in her journey toward professional golf.
With upcoming appearances in major championships, she is poised to make an impact on the international stage, further establishing Malaysia’s presence in the world of women’s golf.
