KUCHING: The Department of Social Welfare (JKM) is fully prepared to handle the current flood situation nationwide, with adequate evacuation centres, supplies, and personnel on standby to ensure the safety and welfare of affected communities.

Minister for Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry remains vigilant and ready to respond to any developments arising from adverse weather conditions.

“As of 4.30 pm on Sunday, a total of eight Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) remain active across five states, involving 93 families and 219 evacuees who have been relocated as a precautionary measure,” she said when met by reporters after officiating at the Yayasan Kebajikan Negara’s (YKN) Ceria Kasih Programme and Back to School 2026 Session at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here on Sunday.

She added that JKM has taken early and comprehensive action, including the opening of PPS, the implementation of self-registration for evacuees through the MyIBJKM system, and the distribution of basic necessities.

“Supplies at all PPS are reported to be sufficient to meet the needs of the evacuees. Preparedness is not an issue, insyaAllah. All officers have been instructed to remain on standby,” she said.

Nancy also emphasised that JKM’s presence in every district nationwide enables faster and more effective assistance to affected communities.

The ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely, with daily updates received at 8 am, including the latest weather warnings from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), which are expected to remain in effect until Thursday.
