KUCHING: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) Kuching Division is tracing the biological mother or next of kin of a baby girl, estimated to be nine days old, who was found on October 13 at the Baby Hatch of Borneo Medical Centre Kuching.

According to the officer’s note, the baby was found in perfect condition and had been left wrapped in a blue-and-white towel.

In a statement today the Kuching Division Social Welfare Department said it was seeking the biological mother or lawful guardian to come forward for further action and to ensure the child’s welfare.

“To assist in this process, the confidentiality of the biological mother or relatives who come forward is guaranteed.

“In addition to the registration of the child’s birth certificate for citizenship determination, the presence of the biological mother or relatives is necessary to assess suitable care or placement arrangements in the best interest of the child,” the statement said.

The department urged the biological mother or legitimate relatives to contact Protector Puan Vessline Apang at 082-507111 or 082-507999, or to visit the department’s office directly for further matters.

The media statement has been issued with the approval of the Kuching Child Court in accordance with Section 15 of the Child Act 2001.
