KUCHING: Timor-Leste forward João Pedro is set to arrive tomorrow (Friday, June 27), as Kuching City FC finalises its seven-import roster for the new season.
Only one foreign player – Cameroonian striker, Ronald Wanja – is pending arrival due to ongoing club commitments until the end of the month.
The Cats’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Iswandi Ali Hassan revealed that two imports have already signed, while the third, Ronald, is 90 per cent confirmed and expected to join the team in early July.
He also said that the third import, Scott Phillip Galang Wood from the Philippines, is scheduled to arrive on Saturday (June 28).
“If we look at the current squad, two imports have signed. The one from Cameroon is close to done, only pending his final match on June 29.
“We expect him to arrive in Kuching by July 6 or 7 after completing his obligations,” said Iswandi to Sarawak Tribune today.
João and Scott will link up with the squad in time for their pre-season tour, which runs from June 30 to July 6.
“They will all join the tour. Only the Cameroonian will miss the early part due to his ongoing season, but the rest are on track,” said Iswandi.
When asked about the possibility of signing more foreign players, Iswandi stressed that the club is operating within a strict budget.
“It really depends on the budget. So far, we’ve finalised seven imports. We can’t follow teams bringing in 15 foreign players – that’s not realistic for us at this stage,” he said.
Kuching City FC’s approach this season focuses on a competitive yet sustainable squad, with emphasis on developing young local talent.
“The team features rising Malaysian strikers, Gabriel Nistelrooy and Ahmad Danial Ahmad Asri, both in their mid-20s.
“If you notice, our approach this season involves a young squad, especially in attack. Players like Gabriel and Danial are around 24 to 25 years old.
“That’s why we brought in the Cameroonian import, not just for his ability, but also to guide and mentor our young players,” Iswandi explained.
The Cameroonian forward, who is currently playing for a club abroad and has previously worked with Aidil, is also expected to bring a strong physical presence to the team.
“He has a solid track record and has worked under Aidil before, (which is a bonus). Plus, he adds height to the team – something we’ve been lacking,” he added.
Ronald Wanja previously played for Kedah Darul Aman and Iraqi side Al-Talaba SC, while Scott Phillip Galang Wood featured for Cambodian Premier League club Boeung Ket.
João Pedro, meanwhile, last played for Angkor Tiger, also in Cambodia.
