JOHOR BAHRU, Johor: Incumbent Rengit assemblyman, Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, has confirmed that he will not defend the seat in the Johor State Election on July 11.
Puad, who is also the Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, said he made the decision a year ago and informed UMNO President, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and Johor UMNO Chairman, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, of his intention two weeks ago.
“Age is the main factor. I am 69 now and would be 74 in five years’ time. I do not think it is appropriate to contest at this age,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He said those aged 50 and below should be given the opportunity to contest state seats, adding that Onn Hafiz should be allowed to lead a younger team and continue administering the state government.
Puad said he had also proposed the qualities to be considered in selecting candidates, including being educated, of good character, committed to the struggle, and understanding the direction of the nation.
He said he would complete several matters requiring attention before nomination day, while expressing appreciation to the people of Rengit for their support and gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for consenting to his appointment as the Johor DUN Speaker.
Puad won the Rengit seat by a 1,920-vote majority in the 2022 Johor State Election.
Polling for the upcoming election will be held on July 11, with nomination day set for June 27. – BERNAMA
