KUCHING: Jonah Chang Rigan electrified the Malaysian Athletics scene at the 2025 SIPMA Games in Johor Bahru when he launched a massive 18.66-metre shot-put to reset his own national record – a leap from last year’s 18.46-metre benchmark at the Pahang Open Athletics Super Series Championship.
The 22-year-old Sarawak-born thrower, competing for MASUM (University Sports Council of Malaysia), headlined the event with a commanding performance on Saturday.
His lead toss surpassed closest rival Earl Isaac Mitzler Fredolin’s best of 15.39 metres by over three metres, with Nathanial Majid claiming third at 15.14 metres.
The record-smashing feat comes just months after he blazed through the Varsity Track & Field (VTF) Championship Circuit 2, where he clinched triple gold and rewrote the VTF meet mark with an 18.39-mere throw, inching ever closer to this new national milestone.
Jonah’s electric form continues his ascent toward the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where he’s confirmed to compete. His trajectory suggests he will be a strong medal contender.
More than personal bests, Saturday’s record is a statement: Malaysia’s shot-put standard has shifted upward.
The varsity game took place from September 1-7 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
