KUCHING: For Sarikei-born strongman, Jonah Chang Rigan, competing at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Summer World University Games (WUG) in Germany was more than just a test of strength – it was a journey of growth, humility and faith.
The 22-year-old athlete represented Malaysia in the men’s shot put, where he finished 16th against a field of elite student-athletes from around the world.
But for Jonah, the experience was not defined by his final ranking.
“Competed on the world stage at WUG and came home 16th. Not just about the ranking – it’s about growth, experience, and the people who believed in me.

“All glory to God,” he wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post after the competition.
The event, held from July 16 to 27, marked a significant milestone for Jonah in a year already filled with personal bests and breakthrough performances.
Earlier this month, Jonah dominated the Malaysian Universities Championship at Stadium UniSZA, sweeping three gold medals in the shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw events.
His explosive performance also saw him shatter a meet record, cementing his status as Malaysia’s top varsity thrower.
With years still ahead in his athletic career, Jonah’s journey is a reminder that success is not always measured by podium finishes, but by perseverance, purpose, and the people you inspire along the way.
