KUCHING: Former Sarawak footballer Joseph Kalang Tie has been appointed head coach of Kuching City FC’s Under-18 squad ahead of the 2026 Piala Belia campaign.

The appointment was confirmed by the club in a Facebook post today (Apr 7), as it continues to strengthen its youth development structure for the upcoming season.

Joseph expressed gratitude to grassroots coaches across the state while acknowledging the challenges of developing young players.

“Praise be to God, and thank you to all the development coaches involved who have never given up in producing Sarawak’s next generation.

“It is a very challenging task for me as the head coach. It’s not easy, but I trust in God’s hands. I will do my best and share whatever knowledge I have,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today (Apr 7).

Joseph began his professional career with Sarawak FA in 2006 and became the team’s youngest captain at the age of 21.

He went on to play for Terengganu FA (2008–2011), Pahang FA (2017) and Selangor FA (2018), before ending his playing career with Kuching City FC after a five-year stint.

He also earned seven caps for the national team, scoring two goals, and was nicknamed “Messi Terengganu” during his time on the east coast for his technical ability and playmaking flair.

Joseph later played a key role in Kuching City’s rise from the M3 League to the Super League between 2019 and 2024 before transitioning into coaching.

He has since remained active in youth development, contributing to grassroots programmes and helping guide young players towards senior-level football, including involvement in competitions such as the Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament.

Joseph is also remembered for facing English club Chelsea FC in 2011, where he played against stars including Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres and Frank Lampard.

With the 2026 Piala Belia campaign on the horizon, his appointment signals Kuching City’s continued commitment to building a strong foundation through youth, with hopes of producing the next generation of talent for both club and country.
