KUCHING: An outstanding interview with a public figure offers a unique angle that adds depth and insight to a news report.

Hence, a journalist must conduct a proper research before conducting the interview.

Veteran journalist and political observer Francis Paul Siah said the research should include looking into the relevant controversies and recent background regarding the issues surrounding the particular interviewee.

“Always prepare key list of questions that you want to ask, and stay flexible throughout the interview.

“At the same time, build rapport with the person concerned first, as our editors expect a good story from us,” he said during a Writing and Journalism workshop, attended by reporters and editors from Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak at the Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) here today.

Francis said during the interview, open-ended questions are crucial to get the full response from the interviewee, especially in terms of the how, why and what.

“Be patience when you interview someone, sometimes if you have to interrupt, do it politely and always stay neutral on the issue at hand.

“If you feel that you do not comprehend the things the person said, do ask for clarification and follow up.

“We want something different, and be honest with the question, avoid tricking your subject,” he added.

If during the interview, an unexpected issue happened such as an argument, Francis said that it is okay to end the interview right away.

“We would just go home, and forget that the interview had happened. At the same time, do not take it too personally,” he added.

The workshop session was attended by chief executive officer of Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir, with Sarawak Tribune’s editor-in-chief Aden Nagrace and Suara Sarawak’s executive editor Rohana Wahed also present.
