KUCHING: Journalists covering overseas assignments must be professionally prepared and well-versed in the state’s policies and development agenda as Sarawak steps up its international engagements.
In stating this Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir said quality reporting on the global stage requires journalists to fully understand the initiatives and direction of the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the Overseas Reporting Workshop: Assignments, Strategies, Challenges and Tips held at Theater Hotel today, he said the workshop was organised to enhance newsroom readiness as more international assignments are planned.
“With Sarawak increasingly visible on the international platform, we are preparing to deploy more journalists and photographers abroad, particularly to cover the Premier’s overseas visits.
“We have already sent teams to Bangkok and China, and this will continue in phases,” he said.
However, he stressed that overseas postings are reserved for journalists who demonstrate strong knowledge, professionalism, discipline and readiness.
“International assignments are not rewards. They are responsibilities.
“Only journalists who are truly prepared will be selected,” he said.
Jeniri expressed confidence in the capabilities of Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune journalists, adding that proper exposure and training would further strengthen their performance.
He described workshop speaker veteran journalist Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya as a highly respected media veteran with extensive experience across print and broadcast journalism, including senior editorial roles at TV3.
“His sharing will equip journalists with practical strategies, insights and best practices to meet international reporting standards,” he said.
Jeniri added that the workshop is expected to elevate the overall quality of reporting and ensure Sarawak’s stories are presented accurately and professionally on the global stage.
