KUCHING: Australia’s Daniel Jovanovski has claimed the Boys’ Singles title at the 44th Premier Sarawak Cup ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J300 after defeating India’s Arnav Paparkar in straight sets.
The Melbourne-based player sealed a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the final, although the contest proved more competitive than the scoreline suggested, with both players engaging in high-quality rallies.
Jovanovski’s path to the title was far from easy, having been pushed to a three-set battle by Japan’s Kanta Watanabe in the semifinals, while Paparkar advanced after defeating Turkey’s Mustafa Ege Sik.
Reflecting on his campaign, the 18-year-old described the tournament as a test of both physical and mental endurance.
“It wasn’t easy. Every match I had to give 100 per cent. I was just battling the whole week, and in the end, it all came together in God’s hands,” he said when met by reporters at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) today.
Jovanovski also highlighted the quality of the final despite the scoreline, noting the challenge posed by Paparkar.
“He played a very good match. The score doesn’t really reflect how tough it was. He’s such a good friend of mine.”
The 18-year-old was equally appreciative of the conditions in Kuching, praising the venue, organisation and hospitality throughout the tournament.
Jovanovski also credited his support system, including coach Andrew Harris, a former champion of the same tournament as well as his faith, for guiding him through the week.
Harris, who won the title in 2010, described the experience as a meaningful return to familiar ground.
“It was fun to be back here after 15 years. Not much has changed, and it was cool to be able to support another Aussie to win this tournament. It brings back a lot of good memories,” Harris said.
With the junior title now secured, Jovanovski is set to continue his competitive schedule with upcoming tournaments in Kuala Lumpur and India, before transitioning into higher-level events.
In the Girls’ Singles, third seed Anastasia Lizunova delivered a composed performance to claim the title, defeating seventh seed Fleur De Bresser in the final.
Lizunova’s run to the crown included a strong win over South Korea’s Ui Su Jeong, while Fleur De Bresser reached the final after beating Japan’s Natsuki Irokawa.
Also present at the closing ceremony were Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep and SLTA president Datuk Patrick Liew.
