KUCHING: The spirit of community and heritage came alive in Kampung Buntal as the ‘Juh Ngambal’ programme drew strong participation from residents and local youth on Saturday.

It was a joint collaboration between the Youth Movement of N.4 Pantai Damai and the Village Chiefs Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Buntal.

The programme aimed to introduce and preserve the traditional coastal skill of ngambal (throw-net fishing) among the younger generation.

According to organisers, the initiative not only offered hands-on experience in learning the proper method of ‘ngambal’, but also served as an important platform to ensure that coastal traditions continue to be appreciated despite the passage of time.

Adding colour to the event was a side activity where participants, especially children, took part in decorating ‘terendak’ (traditional wide-brimmed conical hats) made of nipah leaves.

The craft session received enthusiastic response, giving youngsters a chance to explore traditional art in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

Organisers hoped similar programmes would be continued in the future as part of ongoing efforts to preserve local heritage while strengthening community involvement in cultural and social activities.
