KUCHING: Malaysia’s men’s singles camp enjoyed a bright start today at the 2025 Hong Kong Open on Wednesday as Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin all cleared their opening hurdles in style.
The current national no.1, Jun Hao finally cracked the code against compatriot Lee Zii Jia, prevailing 21-16, 21-16 to record his first-ever win over the former All England champion in four meetings.
The breakthrough victory underlined his steady ascent on the world stage and secured him a berth in the last-16.
Justin, meanwhile, continued his bright run after advancing from the qualifiers. The 20-year-old stunned France’s Toma Junior Popov 21-12, 21-17 to notch his maiden win over a top-15 opponent.
His reward? Is an all-Malaysian second-round clash against Jun Hao — a duel billed as a showcase of the country’s men’s singles depth.
Independent shuttler Aidil Sholeh also stole the spotlight with a gutsy fightback against Taiwan’s Chi Yu-jen. Despite dropping the opening game, the 25-year-old roared back to clinch a 15-21, 21-18, 21-15 upset, booking a last-16 meeting with world No. 10 Christo Popov of France.
With Jun Hao, Justin and Aidil all advancing, Malaysia’s charge in men’s singles remains strong, offering a timely boost heading into the closing stretch of the season.
