KUCHING: Sabah Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh has called for urgent action to address critical issues concerning Sabah and Sarawak, particularly the restoration of one-third parliamentary representation for the Borneo States.
“This is to give an assurance that the constitutional rights of the Borneo States could not be altered by a constitutional amendment without the support of the MPs from Sabah and Sarawak,” he said during the opening of the Legal Year for Sabah and Sarawak 2025 at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today (Jan 10).
Soh said that this safeguard was recognised by the forefathers in forming Malaysia.
He noted that when Singapore left the Federation, its 15 seats were not redistributed to Sabah and Sarawak.
“A one-third representation will also ensure that the Borneo States have a greater participation and say in Malaysia’s future,” he added.
“We should perceive this issue through a ‘nation-building’ lens – and with support from the respective attorney-generals, I am optimistic that with the continued discussions and political will, further progress on this issue will be made.”
Soh acknowledged that while eleven claims have been successfully resolved under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the restoration of the one-third parliamentary representation remains a crucial pending matter.
