TATAU: About 500 kilometres of logging roads in Kakus have been earmarked for phased improvements to enhance access and connectivity in the interior.
Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said the figure formed part of about 5,700km of logging roads across Sarawak identified for upgrading.
He said the projects would require careful planning and phased implementation due to the high costs involved and the terrain in interior areas.
“In August 2025, the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak XPDC 2.0, which was also joined by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, identified several logging roads and former logging roads in the interior of Kakus.
“Among the roads identified were Jalan Penyarai, Jalan Sungai Muput, the road to Ulu Kakus, Jalan Sangan-Nanga Merit and Jalan Nanga Takan,” he said at the opening ceremony of the Rural Minor Project (MRP)-Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Project (PPRMS) at Rumah Ngalai Nanang, Nanga Temajai, Anap, here yesterday (Aug 23).
Sikie, who is also Kakus assemblyman, said many areas in the constituency still lacked proper road connectivity.
Therefore, he said, Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) allocations for the area were also being utilised to upgrade damaged roads.
Meanwhile, he said each constituency was allocated RM1 million annually under PPRMS to assist in repairing homes in need.
The PPRMS project launched during the ceremony involved replacing the roofs and ceilings of the 16-door longhouse at Rumah Ngalai Nanang using an allocation from the Kakus constituency.
Meanwhile, Selangau Member of Parliament Edwin Banta expressed support for development efforts in Kakus, including cooperation among elected representatives to ensure development plans could be implemented more effectively.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue assisting the local community, including in development and supporting Selangau children pursuing higher education.
At the same event, an MRP Project cheque amounting to RM95,000 was presented to 45 Women’s Bureaus under the allocation of the Selangau Member of Parliament.
