SARATOK: Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri has called for greater efforts to preserve the traditional game of gasing (top spinning), urging the involvement of clubs and organisations to ensure the heritage sport continues to thrive in the face of modern influences.
Speaking at the Kalaka gasing competition for the Aidilfitri Cup 2025 at Kenyalang Court in Kampung Tanjung Hulu last night, he stressed the need for structured support to keep the tradition alive.
党It would be ideal to have an agency dedicated to preserving gasing and other traditional sports ・this could include non-governmental organisations (NGOs),・he said.
Their role should cover organising competitions, training youth, passing down the art of gasing making, and maintaining the equipment.
He warned that without such initiatives, gasing could fade into obscurity, overtaken by modern sports and digital entertainment.
Mohamad also praised organisations like the Kenyalang Gasing Sports Club for their continued commitment to promoting the game through regular competitions.
He acknowledged that gasing still enjoys a loyal following. This traditional sport can remain evergreen with dedicated efforts and government backing. It holds nostalgic value and brings back fond childhood memories.
Participants in the competition hailed from Saratok, Sri Aman, Debak, and Spaoh, which Mohamad said reflected the enduring popularity of the game across communities.
The younger generation must do their part in preserving this cultural legacy. Let us work together to ensure gasing is not lost to time.
Mohamad also announced that the Kalaka gasing competition will return as a main event during the upcoming Saratok Festival in July.
In the Aidilfitri Cup 2025 edition, Team Pak Aji A emerged as champion, followed by Mok Team in second place, and Pak Aji B in third.
Also present were Saratok District officer Muhammad Dino Amid, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kalaka Branch deputy chief Councillor Kasdi Pandi, Kenyalang Gasing Sports Club chairman Harjam Jemain, and local community leaders.
