SARATOK: The sport of slingshot, or lastik, is gaining popularity as a recreational activity among the community in Saratok.
Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said the activity is now more than just a traditional pastime.
“Melastik, or slingshot as the younger generation calls it, is becoming increasingly popular among the local community.
“After several competitions were organised this year, it has consistently received encouraging participation.
“Most recently, the Kalaka Slingshot Competition for the Pemanca Lim Guan Ann Trophy drew 38 participants from the surrounding area.
“I see it as an enjoyable game that enhances focus, trains hand–eye coordination, and strengthens arm muscles,” he said when officiating the closing and prize-giving ceremony here yesterday.
His speech was read by Kalaka PBB deputy chief Councillor Kasdi Pandi.
He noted that the sport also teaches players to be patient, calm, and disciplined when aiming at targets.
“Besides that, it is a low-cost sporting alternative that is easily accessible to people from all walks of life.
“However, safety aspects must be emphasised, including the use of special pellets and designated areas to avoid injury.”
He praised the Kalaka PBB Youth Wing for successfully organising the competition in collaboration with MST Kampung Melango Saratok.
“My heartfelt thanks to the Chinese Community Pemanca of Saratok District, Lim Guan Ann, who sponsored the prizes for this edition of the competition,” he said.
In the eight-metre category, Melvin Frank Liang emerged champion and won RM150, followed by runner-up Morsidi Amat with RM100, while third place went to Mohd Syahril Niza Jamahri who received RM50.
Meanwhile, Azuan Sapuan Abd Ganie won the 10-metre category with a prize of RM150. Morsidi Amat took second place (RM100), followed by Ridzal Ahim in third (RM50).
All winners also received medals and hampers.
