SIBU: A total of 1,258 people helped create a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) achievement through a mass kampua mee (popular Foochow noodles) mixing challenge held in conjunction with the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2026 here on Thursday night.
The participants gathered at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 for the ‘Most Participation in Kampua Noodle Tossing’ event organised by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), surpassing the initial target of 1,000 participants.
Organising committee chairperson Councillor Michelle Law said the achievement was particularly meaningful as the event initially received a lukewarm response.
“Honestly, I didn’t think we could achieve it because, at the beginning, the response was quite cold.
“However, with the help of the United Chinese Associations (UCA) and social media influencers, we managed to attract many participants,” she told reporters after the event.
The event saw 800 participants register online, while the remainder comprised walk-in participants, representatives from the private sector and school students.
Among the institutions that sent contingents were Pilley Methodist Institute and SM Wong Nai Siong, which contributed 68 participants, as well as local companies including Mafrika and Farley.
The record-setting event also drew international participation, with performance contingents from Putian, China and Brunei joining the challenge, alongside tourists from France and the United States.
Law said the registration counter had to be closed earlier than scheduled due to the encouraging response from walk-in participants, as well as logistical constraints involving time, crowd control and noodle supplies.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh was also present to witness the presentation of the MBOR certificate by MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh to Law.
Law expressed her appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, particularly those who waited patiently in line to take part.
“I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to all parties, especially those who waited patiently in line, as well as the local community for their encouraging support regardless of background, whether Chinese, Dayak or Malay,” she said.
