KUCHING: Kampung Bako is fast emerging as one of Sarawak’s hidden treasures, boasting extraordinary potential to develop into a world-class tourism destination.

With the presence of Bako National Park, an ecological sanctuary recognised as a World Heritage Site, said Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, the park’s rich biodiversity and status as a natural habitat for unique wildlife – particularly the endangered proboscis monkey – positions it as a powerful attraction for both domestic and international visitors.

“Kampung Bako is not merely a holiday destination; it is a hidden gem awaiting its turn to shine as a green tourism icon for Sarawak.

“We are blessed with invaluable natural assets, but we must work collectively to harness and protect them,” he said when officiating the Bako Day 2025 celebration held recently.

Bako Day 2025 featured an array of community and local economic activities, including cooking competitions, floral arrangements, traditional board games, as well as exhibitions by government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Adding vibrancy to the event was the arrival of high-powered motorcyclists participating in the Second Sarawak International Bike Gathering 2025, which significantly boosted the tourism visibility of the village.

In terms of infrastructure and economic growth, Dr Hazland, who is also Demak Laut assemblyman, noted that Kampung Bako’s rising potential is being bolstered by major development projects, including the proposed deep-sea port and international airport in Tanjong Embang, both of which are expected to become key economic drivers for the region.

“With our natural wealth and the state government’s strong commitment, Kampung Bako is now on the right trajectory to become a leading ecotourism destination in this part of the world,” he concluded.
