KUCHING: Residents of Kampung Burung Lilin celebrated Sarawak Day today (Jul 22) with a modest yet spirited gathering that drew strong participation from the local community.

The celebration was attended by Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang as the special guest.

In his speech, Lo reminded the community that Sarawak Day was officially gazetted as a public holiday by the late former Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, to commemorate July 22, 1963 – the day Sarawak was granted self-government from British rule and began to be administered by Sarawakians.

“From July 22, 1963 onwards, Sarawak has been governed by Sarawakians. This happened even before the formation of Malaysia,” Lo said.

That said, Lo urged the people of Kampung Burung Lilin to continue supporting the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led state government as the current administration had brought significant development to benefit the people.

He also commended the unity and cooperation shown by the villagers under the leadership of village chief Poniman Dahlan, as such spirit of togetherness would continue to thrive.

During the event, Lo presented a RM3,000 Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the Kampung Burung Lilin Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

Earlier, Poniman, who is also the Kampung Burung Lilin JKKK chairman, expressed his gratitude to Lo for his presence at the event, and that hosting such a celebration was important to instil a sense of patriotism and love for the homeland, especially among the younger generation.

Among the activities held during the event were a zumba workout session, children’s futsal and colouring competitions, adult tug-of-war, and a coconut bowling contest.
