MUKAH: Kampung Penat has been selected as the implementation site for the ‘Santuni MADANI Programme: One Village, One Leader‘ in the Mukah parliamentary constituency.
The project reflects the federal government’s commitment to bridge urban-rural development gaps.
Mukah Member of Parliament, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, said the initiative reflects a nationwide strategy requiring ministers and senior officials from ministries, government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to engage directly with rural communities by adopting one village each.
“This ground engagement helps us better understand local challenges and tailor development strategies that are comprehensive and focused,” Hanifah said at the meet-the-people session held at the Kampung Penat Multipurpose Hall on Sunday.
She added that several development projects have already been implemented or are in progress in Kampung Penat through the Mukah Parliamentary Service Centre.
“These include the construction of the Darul Falah Mosque under the People-Friendly Projects (PMR), housing improvements under the Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Programme (PPRMS), and other initiatives under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP),” she said.
A key feature of the programme was an open dialogue session where residents were given the opportunity to directly express their views, needs, and aspirations to the relevant authorities.
“The session was well-received and represents a meaningful step towards strengthening two-way communication between leaders and the community,” she noted.
Hanifah also took the opportunity to remind residents of the pressing need to prepare for the impacts of climate change, stressing that environmental preservation is a shared responsibility.
She encouraged the community to reduce plastic usage, conserve electricity, and participate in tree-planting initiatives.
“The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should guide us in shaping an inclusive, progressive, and sustainable community; one that is resilient and future-ready,” she said.
