KUCHING: The road-widening project in Kampung Tabuan Melayu can only proceed once the relocation of affected residents is completed, says Santubong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She stressed that while infrastructure development is important, it must be balanced with community welfare and proper coordination to ensure a smooth and fair transition for all involved.

“The planned road expansion in Kampung Tabuan Melayu hinges on the successful relocation of residents, as space constraints and land ownership complexities make the project challenging,” she said.

“The area, home to 12,827 residents across seven villages, lacks the space needed for infrastructure upgrades. I understand the three state assemblymen (ADUN) have already initiated plans for a new housing scheme — likely in the form of apartment-style housing — to better utilise available land and ensure no resident is left behind.”

She added that parts of the affected land are owned by private companies, which further complicates the relocation process.

“The best way forward is through this housing plan, which will allow us to relocate residents properly and proceed with the road-widening project to benefit the entire community.”

Nancy, who is also the federal Women, Family and Community Development Minister, made the remarks during the Ibadah Korban ceremony organised by Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) in collaboration with P193 Santubong at Masjid Darus Sa誕dah in Kampung Tabuan Hilir on Saturday (June 7).

Her comments followed a statement by Kampung Tabuan Melayu village headman Penghulu Amzah Dollah, who shared that Phase One of the relocation effort — a 10-storey apartment in Muara Tabuan — is already 60 to 70 per cent complete.

The development, near Toko Electronic (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, is part of a broader housing initiative aimed at resolving space constraints and improving living conditions for affected villagers.

Amzah also noted that the Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) housing project — designated for Kampung Tabuan Melayu residents who do not own property — is currently on hold pending land stabilization. The project is located within the Demak Laut constituency.

“This development is meant specifically for the people of Kampung Tabuan Melayu, especially those without land or homes of their own,” he said.

Launched in August 2023, the project is part of the state’s strategy to provide safe, well-organised, and comfortable housing for low-income groups.

The RSP project involves two blocks of housing, with the first phase expected to be completed between June 2027 and 2029.

“Now, we have to wait for the land to stabilise. Housing construction will most likely take place between 2027 and 2029. This is Phase One — something similar to the Sungai Bedaun Spektra housing project, as mentioned by the Demak Laut ADUN,” Amzah said.
