KUCHING: Kanowit remained the only area in Sarawak recording ‘Very Unhealthy’ air quality as of 8 am today (Sept. 26), with an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 215.
Serian was the only other area recording ‘Unhealthy’ air quality, with an API of 152.
In Betong, where the three-day ‘Sarawakku Sayang’ (SKS) programme is being held, the API improved to 99, placing the division in the ‘Moderate’ category.
However, the haze has already disrupted the programme, with three outdoor activities scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 27), namely aerobics, Betong Berekot and Ngohet Sikai, cancelled as a precaution following advice from the Betong Divisional Health Office.
The SKS main organising committee said the decision was made to reduce health and safety risks to participants, personnel and members of the public, while other activities under the programme will proceed as scheduled.
The development comes after Betong visitors were earlier advised by authorities to take health precautions when attending the programme, after the division recorded an API of 170 last Thursday.
Meanwhile, most other areas in Sarawak recorded ‘Moderate’ air quality.
Sri Aman recorded an API of 97, while Kuching and Bintulu recorded 93 each. Samarahan recorded 87, Lubok Antu 83, Sarikei 82 and Belaga 80.
Tebedu recorded 77, Sibu and Mukah 71 each, Lundu 66, Samalaju 62, ILP Miri 60, Miri and Lawas 58 each, and Limbang 53.
Bario recorded the only ‘Good’ reading at 50, while Kapit had no latest data available.
