KAPIT: The Kapit League Football Championship 2025 kicked off on Friday (August 8), with Pelagus Assemblyman, Wilson Nyambong Ijang, hailing the sport as a bridge of unity and a driver of youth development in rural Sarawak.
Speaking at the tournament’s opening ceremony, Wilson said football is not just a sport but a unifying platform for the community, in line with the aspirations of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“The organisation of this championship proves that sports can bring people together while empowering human capital, especially among the youth in the interior,” he said.
Wilson urged young players from Kapit to aim beyond district-level success and strive to compete at state and national stages.
“Sports are the best medium to build discipline, teamwork and healthy competitiveness,” he added.
This year’s edition features seven teams, with the opening match seeing KATIBAS FC take on OUNA.
Wilson also encouraged players to showcase their talents with a strong spirit of sportsmanship, while calling on coaches and team managers to continue guiding the younger generation with dedication.
Also present were Bukit Mabong District Office representative, George Janduk, Kapit FA Vice-President, Mark Kayan, Kapit Division Assistant Youth and Sports Officer, Martin Sherman, and other distinguished guests.
