KAPIT: The Kapit Peace Agreement of 1924 established the foundation for the lasting peace and harmony enjoyed today, says Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang.
He said that the historic event is remembered as a significant turning point for the Orang Ulu community which highlighted how the agreement successfully ended prolonged conflicts among local communities, particularly between the Orang Ulu and Iban ethnic groups.
“The Kapit Peace Agreement did more than just end conflicts. It created harmony that allowed our communities to grow and thrive in a peaceful environment,” he said.
He said this in his speech at the International Seminar on the 100th Anniversary of the Kapit Peace Agreement 1924, held at Dewan Suarah Kapit here yesterday (Dec 7).
He also explained the significance of the traditional boundary known as ‘Kaki Wong Mikai’, which symbolised demarcation and peace.
According to him, the area below the boundary belonged to the Iban community, while the territory above was home to the Orang Ulu.
“Following the signing of the Kapit Peace Agreement, the Orang Ulu community was no longer entangled in conflicts.
“Instead, they were able to focus on community development, preserving cultural traditions, and strengthening their economic activities.
“After this agreement, our community could live more harmoniously. This legacy must be preserved and respected so that future generations understand the importance of peace,” he added.
Liwan emphasised that the success of the agreement was due to the understanding and willingness of all parties involved to collaborate for the common good.
