KAPIT: The Kapit constituency has the potential to emerge as a hub for the preservation and promotion of Dayak culture, particularly Iban traditions, said Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Speaking at the ‘Majlis Mantar Hari Gawai Dayak’ at Dewan Suarah Kapit on Sunday night, which drew a crowd of around 1,500 people, Nanta said many elements of Iban customs can trace their origins to Kapit, making it a fitting focal point for cultural efforts.
“This is not just about safeguarding our cultural identity; it also opens doors for the growth of heritage-based entrepreneurship,” he said.
By capitalising on this cultural strength, Nanta believes more entrepreneurs will be inspired to venture into industries linked to customs and traditions, contributing to economic growth rooted in local identity.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining unity and harmony among the multiracial communities here and Sarawak at large.
“Equally important is the continued support for our leaders so that our development agenda can progress without disruption,” he added.
Acknowledging longstanding calls for improved connectivity and infrastructure in Kapit, Nanta assured residents that tangible progress is underway.
Among the projects in motion is the construction of a nine-storey hotel aimed at boosting local tourism and economic activity.
“The hotel will bring in more visitors and strengthen Kapit’s economy,” he said.
Other ongoing developments include the transformation of Dataran Bujang Berani and the Kapit Waterfront, as well as the upcoming MARA Professional College site at Nanga Yong.
In response to local concerns, Nanta announced that construction has begun on a new road linking Nanga Semaram to the opposite bank of Nanga Yong, where a bridge will soon be built across the Batang Rajang River.
“This new route will ease travel for residents heading to Sibu and Kanowit, and improve accessibility and livelihoods along the river’s left bank,” he said.
