KAPIT: The RM10.3 million Kapit Waterfront phase two is expected to become a new attraction for visitors while creating more space for community activities and economic growth in the division.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project, completed on June 19, also serves as a symbol of ‘segulai sejalai’ and teamwork among local leaders, agencies and residents in bringing long-awaited development to Kapit.

“Kapit has come a long way compared to 10 or 15 years ago. This didn’t happen overnight. It is the result of continued effort from our past and present leaders, including the late Tan Sri James Jemut Masing,” he said.

He said this in his Facebook post after officiating the Completion Launch Ceremony of the ‘Proposed Riverbank and Slope Protection Works and Extension of Kapit Waterfront’ project here today.

Nanta, who is the Kapit MP also welcomed the placement of a warrior monument at the far end of the waterfront, saying it is a timely reminder of the many Kapit-born fighters who once defended the nation under the Sarawak Rangers.

“This isn’t just about remembering the past. It’s about recognising the sacrifice of those from Kapit who gave their lives for our homeland,” he added.

Implemented by the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD), the project includes riverbank and slope protection works, extension of the waterfront structure, longboat mooring facilities, walkways, amphitheatre, shaded roofs, landscaping and supporting infrastructure.

Sarawak PWD said the initiative builds on the earlier phase of the waterfront development, aimed not only at improving safety and preventing erosion, but also enhancing the overall landscape and public facilities.

“The success of this project proves that with proper coordination from planning to implementation, involving the community as well, we can deliver results that benefit everyone.

“Beyond strengthening physical safety, this project also creates room for developing more people-friendly public spaces.

“The Kapit Waterfront is expected to become a hub for social, recreational, and new economic activities for the local community, including events such as speedboat races, rafting, and other water sports,” said the department in a statement.
