KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports aspires to have a court specifically to handle cases involving foreign tourists as soon as possible.

Its minister, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said: “Sometimes, we see foreign tourists being robbed or becoming victims of snatch thieves.

“We need an efficient and fast institution to deal with these cases because tourists do not stay at one place for long.

“Besides, the usual courts manage other cases as well. Hence, with a tourism court, everything can be dealt with faster,” said Karim.

He was interviewed during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DPB) here yesterday.

Asked how the court should be established, Karim said it was not for him to decide.

“Of course, I did contact the state’s courts to enquire about the process. We want the judiciary to see the importance of setting up the tourism court,” said the Minister.
