OYA: The Kaul Oya Festival is not merely a traditional celebration but also serves as a catalyst for inclusive development and the strengthening of the local community’s economy.
Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said this aligns with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), with the state government remaining committed to balanced development statewide, including in rural areas such as Oya and Dalat.
She said that the development approach goes beyond the provision of basic infrastructure and public amenities, encompassing community empowerment through support for cultural events like the Kaul Festival.
“The Kaul Festival not only plays a role in preserving cultural heritage, but also serves as a platform to strengthen social unity and stimulate economic activities at the local level.
“This festival is a cultural legacy rich in traditional values, symbolising gratitude and harmony between humans and nature, while also representing unity among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities,” she said when officiating at the Kaul Oya Festival 2026 held at the Lebuk Kaul Oya riverfront on Saturday (April 11).
Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, said the festival provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together, foster closer ties, and strengthen intergenerational relationships, while promoting mutual respect and cooperation within the community.
She added that the festival also brings economic benefits by creating opportunities for small entrepreneurs and local residents to generate income.
She expressed hope that cultural heritage events such as the Kaul Festival would continue to be preserved and enhanced as valuable economic assets for the state.
