KUCHING: Parents, educational institutions and the young generation must work together to ensure children are protected from the risk of sexual crimes, which can have lasting physical, emotional and psychological consequences.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaint Bureau Chief, Milton Foo, said sexual offences remain a serious concern, particularly with the widespread use of social media and online platforms that have made it easier for predators to target vulnerable individuals.

As such, parents are urged to be responsible and play a more active role in monitoring their children’s movements and activities, as online platforms have made it easier for predators to approach potential victims.

“I want to remind all parents, especially those with daughters of school-going age, whether in primary or secondary school, to play their role as responsible parents.

“Make sure your children do not freely go out at night, especially if it involves staying overnight with friends or people they do not know,” he said at a press conference today.

He made these remarks in reference to a recent sexual assault case involving a schoolgirl, in which the accused has since been charged in court.

Foo said such crimes can leave victims with lifelong emotional and psychological trauma while also affecting their families.

Members of the public are reminded that protecting vulnerable members of society, particularly girls, from becoming victims of sexual assault, is a shared responsibility.

“We need to build a safer and more responsible society. If we notice something suspicious or a situation that does not seem right, especially at night, we should step in or at least seek help.

“If something feels wrong, we have a responsibility to act. A simple act of concern may help prevent someone from becoming a victim,” he said.

Meanwhile, lawyer Joanne Loy, who will be acting as a pro bono watching brief for the victim and the family, said the case should serve as a wake-up call that sexual crimes against minors remain a serious issue in society.

“We are speaking out not only for this victim, but also to encourage other victims and their families to come forward, seek help and speak up.

“We also want to send a clear message to offenders – there are consequences for your actions, and anyone who commits such crimes will be held accountable under the law,” she said.
