KUCHING: A total of 40 key stakeholders from ministries, agencies, academic institutions, and industry players will participate in a press and syndication session on July 21, hosted by Sarawak Microelectronic Design (SMD) Semiconductor.

The event, to be held here, brings together federal and state ministries, including the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), alongside local universities, training institutions, and industry leaders.

It follows the earlier launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030: Beyond Moore’s Law, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the CSA Catapult in Wales on April 29.

Shariman Jamil

SMD Chief Executive Officer, Shariman Jamil, will present the roadmap’s 10 strategic pillars designed to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak by 2030, focusing on high-impact sectors such as chip design, research and development (R&D), and advanced packaging, all expected to spur high-income job creation and long-term economic growth.

“This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs – locally and globally – and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians.

“This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak’s journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It’s not just ambition. It’s happening – and we want everyone to be part of it,” Shariman said in a statement on Friday (July 18).

The session will also include insights into the Malaysia National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) by Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST), and a presentation on the private funding and venture capital landscape by SMD chief financial officer Shahril Anas.

Sean Redmond, managing partner of Silicon Catalyst UK, and a representative from the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) will share developments in the UK semiconductor ecosystem.

Participants will collaborate to develop coordinated strategies that align with national and global semiconductor goals, with the session’s findings and strategic recommendations to be formally submitted to the Premier to further enrich the state’s semiconductor development blueprint.
