SIBU: Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing thanked Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for personally addressing healthcare issues here and ensuring that necessary measures are being taken.

According to Tiong, the government is taking immediate steps to resolve the shortage of medical officers at Sibu Hospital, particularly anaesthetists and intensive care unit (ICU) staff.

“In a statement in Parliament, he assured that the shortage of anaesthetists and ICU medical officers at Sibu Hospital would be addressed as soon as possible.

“He has instructed the director-general of Health and the deputy director-general (Medical) to take the necessary action,” said Tiong in his Facebook post today.

Tiong praised Dr Dzulkefly’s hands-on approach, noting the Minister’s visit to Sibu, where he personally inspected Sibu Hospital and three health clinics — Lanang Health Clinic, Jalan Oya Health Clinic, and Sibu Jaya Health Clinic — to assess the situation.

“I also sincerely thank the minister for announcing the RM9.1 million allocation to optimise Sibu Hospital, including RM1.3 million for upgrading and purchasing medical equipment and RM7.8 million to address the hospital’s ceiling mould problem,” he added.

He stressed that the improvement project for Sibu Hospital is the result of everyone’s collective efforts.

“So, I urge all parties or any political group not to politicise this issue or claim credit for it, as this would diminish the true collaborative effort and potentially hijack the fruits of others’ labour,” he added.

Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, a new hospital building will be constructed at Sibu Hospital, adding 340 more beds.

Plans are also in place for a new Jalan Oya Health Clinic to ease congestion at the current facility.
