KUCHING: After 16 years leading Sarawak’s fatwa institution, Datuk Kipli Yassin will retire tomorrow (Sat, Feb 28), concluding a tenure defined by his commitment to harmony among the state’s multiracial and multireligious communities.
The Mufti of Sarawak said unity among the state’s multiracial and multireligious communities had remained the core principle throughout his tenure.

His retirement follows a courtesy call on the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Satria Pertiwi Complex here today, which he described as deeply meaningful.
“As the Mufti of Sarawak, I will retire starting tomorrow, and this courtesy visit to the Premier of Sarawak is very meaningful as a sign of appreciation for the trust and confidence given by the state leadership throughout my service.
“I am indebted to the trust placed in me to lead the fatwa institution in particular, as well as Islamic institutions in Sarawak,” he said during a press conference after the meeting.
Kipli stressed that the role of the fatwa institution extends beyond issuing religious rulings solely for Muslims, noting that careful consideration is given to maintaining harmony with non-Muslims in the state.
“Although fatwas are specifically for Muslims, we also take into consideration that what we issue does not hurt the feelings of non-Muslims. In this way, our lives will always remain harmonious,” he said.
Throughout his service, he credited the Sarawak Government’s continued support for strengthening the institution’s role, enabling it to function in a more systematic, broad and inclusive manner, including adapting to technological developments and increasing social inclusivity.
Reflecting on his experience, Kipli said his 16 years as mufti had given him deeper insight into the realities of society in Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.
He described the level of harmony among Sarawak’s diverse religious and ethnic communities as very good, attributing it to a wise approach, mutual respect and continuous cooperation.
On his successor, he said a candidate has been identified, with the official announcement to be made by the Sarawak Government.
