KUCHING: A kitchen fire destroyed part of a single-storey terrace house here on Sunday morning (March 15), but no injuries or casualties were reported as the occupants were not at home at the time of the incident.

The blaze broke out at a property in Maple Village along Lorong Bunga Raya 1F, Jalan Kampung Gita Baru.

The emergency call was received at about 11.00 am, according to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre.

Firefighters from the Petra Jaya station were dispatched to the scene with a fire rescue tender and six personnel.

Initial findings indicated that the fire was confined to the kitchen area of the permanent structure house. The space, measuring roughly 10 by 10 square feet, was completely destroyed.

Although the flames did not spread to other sections of the house, thick smoke caused damage to the dining area, living room and a bathroom.

Residents in the neighbourhood managed to bring the fire under control before firefighters arrived, using tap water and a portable fire extinguisher.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said the responding crew later carried out overhaul works to ensure there were no remaining hotspots that could reignite the fire.

A hose line from the fire engine was deployed during the inspection and cooling operation before the scene was declared safe.

Firefighters left the location after confirming the blaze had been fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and authorities did not provide an estimate of the losses, but investigations are expected to determine the source of ignition.
