KUCHING: The role of Community Leaders and Village Chiefs (KMKK) is vital as they act as the main institution linking the government with the people at the grassroots level, said Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said the KMKK not only ensure that government policies are effectively communicated and implemented but also safeguard the continuity of socioeconomic and cultural development within local communities.

“Because they understand the conditions and needs of the community, the KMKK serve as a crucial bridge in ensuring the people’s well-being and realising government policies,” he said in a statement.

Nanta, who attended the Special Committee Meeting on the Management of KMKK and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Sarawak on Monday (Aug 25), said it not only allowed for discussions on various issues but also provided room for input and recommendations to further strengthen the role of KMKK.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, focused on several key matters including a proposal for the creation of KMKK Sarawak posts, the review of the KMKK Sarawak Service Scheme, and the appointment of Division-level KMKK Selection Panel Committee members.

“What drew the most attention was the proposal to increase the salaries of community leaders and the allowances of village chiefs.

“This is important not only as recognition of their service and role, but also to enhance and streamline efforts in advancing and prospering the people,” Nanta said.

He expressed hope that the meeting would have a positive impact on the roles and responsibilities of some 7,700 KMKK across Sarawak in delivering the best services to the grassroots.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
