SRI AMAN: Mastery of knowledge and the value of integrity must go hand in hand in developing the Muslim community and driving Sarawak’s progress.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the history of Islamic civilisation shows that the development of Islam has always been centred on knowledge, as reflected in the teachings of the Quran which serve as guidance for humanity.
“We know that throughout Islamic history, if Islam is to progress, it is centred on knowledge. But more importantly, we must internalise and practise that knowledge to improve our standing,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the Sarawak-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration for the year 1447H/2026M at the Sri Aman Town Mosque on Friday (Mar 6).
The event was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Abang Johari expressed appreciation for their presence, noting that it not only enlivened the celebration but also served as encouragement for the Muslim community to continue strengthening unity and improving their socio-economic standing.
He also expressed gratitude that Muslims in Sarawak are able to observe Ramadan and carry out religious obligations in a peaceful environment.
“Your presence not only enlivens this celebration but also encourages the Muslim community to maintain unity and continue striving to improve their socio-economic position while contributing to the development of Sarawak together with those of other faiths.
“We should be thankful that we are able to celebrate Nuzul Al-Quran in peace here in Sarawak, while in other parts of the world there are Muslim communities facing hardship during this blessed month,” he said.
Quoting a teaching from the Quran, Abang Johari reminded that change can only take place if people themselves strive to improve their circumstances.
“In the Quran, it is mentioned that Allah will not change the condition of a people unless they change what is within themselves. Likewise in Sarawak, if we want to progress, we ourselves must take the effort to bring about that change,” he said.
Abang Johari pointed out that knowledge alone is not sufficient without integrity, as both elements must complement each other in shaping a progressive and ethical society.
He also said the state government places strong emphasis on education to enhance the knowledge of its people, including providing free tertiary education for Sarawakian students.
“Knowledge without integrity will not bring benefit. Likewise, integrity without knowledge will also not bring meaningful results. But when knowledge is combined with integrity, it becomes a strong foundation for developing humanity and protecting the environment around us.
“Our children must seize the opportunity to gain knowledge and improve themselves. Education is the key to building a stronger community and a stronger state,” he said.
At the same time, Abang Johari said Muslims should emulate the character of Prophet Muhammad SAW who was known as Al-Amin for his trustworthiness and integrity even from a young age.
“Because of his strong integrity, Siti Khadijah entrusted him with managing her trade and business. This is the kind of character that should guide us in our lives,” he said.
Abang Johari also said Sarawak is currently undergoing a transformation aimed at elevating the state to a higher level of development.
“Our goal is to become creators, not merely followers, especially in fields of knowledge that are important for the development of our state,” he added.
