KUCHING: A student from Kolej Vokasional Betong has won the Sarawak Premier Golden Hand Awards 2025 in additive manufacturing.

Liew Jew Sheng emerged as the top winner in the highly competitive skills category, marking a significant milestone for Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions in Sarawak.

“I am very happy to receive this Golden Hand award and grateful to my trainer, Teacher Raffi, who guided me patiently throughout the journey.”

Liew said this to the reporters at the Sarawak Premier Golden Hand Awards 2025 at CIDB Convention Centre, Petra Jaya on Monday (Dec 15).

“The achievement motivated me to encourage more young Sarawakians to join the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) pathway, which I believe plays a vital role in developing skilled talent.”

He will represent Sarawak at the national-level competition in Kuala Lumpur, where he plans to undergo intensive preparation to compete against Malaysia’s best young talents.

“With consistent training and self-discipline will be my main focus as he prepares for the larger competition ahead at the national stage.”

He stressed that success in skills competitions requires continuous practice, mental resilience, and a strong commitment to improving technical competencies.

Sharing his views on TVET, Liew said vocational education equips students with practical skills that are not only relevant for careers but also useful in daily life.

He added that TVET contributes directly to Sarawak’s development by producing skilled workers who can support industry growth and technological advancement.

Reflecting on his preparation, Liew admitted he did not expect to win the Golden Hand award, describing the victory as a joyful and humbling surprise.

He credited the structured training environment at Kolej Vokasional Betong and the guidance of his teachers for shaping his confidence and technical abilities.

Liew also revealed that his inspiration to enter the technical field came from his father, who operates an automotive repair workshop in Jelokong.

“Growing up around the workshop exposed me early to mechanical work, repairs, and problem-solving, which sparked my interest in technical and vocational skills.”

He added that his teachers later encouraged him to channel that interest into formal training and competitive platforms such as skills competitions.
