KUCHING: A routine market visit turned into a call for urgent repairs as Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, inspected the public toilets at the Kota Sentosa Seventh Mile Market here following mounting feedback from hawkers and visitors.
Yap, accompanied by officers from the Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), Penghulu Lai Boon Khee and Kapitan Lee Tho Fung, conducted a detailed walk-through of the ageing toilet facilities today.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the scope of necessary upgrades, and lay the groundwork for improvement works.
“The people have spoken, and we are here to respond, not with excuses, but with solutions.
“Clean and functioning public toilets are a basic right, not a privilege,” he said in a statement.
During the visit, he met with several hawkers and market-goers who shared their concerns about the current state of the toilets, citing cleanliness and functionality as persistent issues.
“I assure that efforts were already underway to address the problem, beginning with a detailed bill of quantities to fast-track repairs.
“This is not about finger-pointing. It’s about taking responsibility and getting things done,” he stressed.
In the meantime, Lai and Lee both welcomed the move, praising the timely intervention, and expressing hope that the upcoming works would significantly improve the facility’s condition for the benefit of all market users.
Meanwhile, PMC stated that repair works will be prioritised to minimise disruption to daily market activities.
The Seventh Mile Market was previously upgraded in 2023 under Yap’s RTP 2022 allocation of RM400,000, but concerns over the public toilets remained unresolved until now.
The latest visit signals the start of broader infrastructure improvements planned for the market area.
Further updates will be shared once repair works are scheduled.
