KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has urged accuracy and restraint in constitutional debates, warning against misrepresentations that risk undermining national unity and federal harmony.

He said respect for the Federal Constitution and the Westminster system remains essential but constitutional principles must be applied with context, proportionality and a clear understanding of political realities.

“Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi’s remarks were made amid rising political bickering that threatens national harmony, not as a rejection of Malaysia or the federation,” Yap said in a press statement today.

He stressed that portraying the remarks as disloyal or unconstitutional was misleading, noting they were intended as a reminder of moderation, mutual respect and responsible political discourse.

“Malaysia’s constitutional framework should not be used to silence legitimate concerns raised in the interest of unity and stability,” he said, highlighting the balance within collective Cabinet responsibility.

Yap said collective responsibility must also coexist with the federal structure, which recognises the rights, voice and standing of founding partners such as Sarawak.

He pointed to the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, saying GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) has consistently resolved differences through constitutional channels and institutional dialogue.

“GPS has always chosen principled engagement over confrontation, ensuring Sarawak’s interests are advanced responsibly within the federation.”

Yap said calls for resignation do not strengthen constitutional governance, urging attention instead on equitable development, full Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) implementation and stronger federal-state cooperation.
