KUCHING: The spirit of Gawai was brought early to underprivileged families in Kota Sentosa as their assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin led a food basket distribution drive ahead of the festive season.
The initiative, carried out with the support of community leaders Penghulu Jakup Buan, Christopher Chaong and Michael Mada, was aimed at ensuring that disadvantaged households are not left out of the celebration.
More than just a festive gesture, the distribution is part of Yap’s broader commitment to social inclusivity and grassroots engagement.
“This is part of our commitment to making sure that every family, regardless of background can celebrate Gawai with joy and dignity.
“It’s about showing that we care, and that we are here for them not just during celebrations, but all year round,” he said.
The food baskets, filled with essential items, were personally handed out by Yap, who also took time to speak with each family and listen to their concerns.
His personal touch and down-to-earth approach drew appreciation from the recipients, many of whom welcomed the festive aid as a much-needed relief.
The effort also supports the objectives of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which prioritises social equity and inclusive progress across Sarawak.
As the Gawai celebration nears, the outreach programme highlights the importance of unity and compassion in building resilient communities, values that Yap said remain central to his work in Kota Sentosa.
