KUCHING: Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, conducted a site inspection at Borneo Garden to monitor remedial drainage works linked to the ART Red Line construction.
The inspection was carried out together with Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd representatives to assess ongoing efforts addressing drainage issues that emerged during construction activities in the area.
“Development must not compromise residents’ safety, and drainage systems must remain functional to prevent flooding, especially during heavy rainfall,” Yap said during the site briefing today.
Yap was accompanied by senior engineer (civil), Radin Muhammad Norqayyum, along with officers from Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd throughout the monitoring exercise.
“The visit followed renewed concerns raised by residents of Borneo Garden Sdn Bhd regarding a blocked earth drain affecting water flow within the neighbourhood.
“The affected earth drain is a critical channel carrying rainwater from Borneo Garden and surrounding areas before discharging across Jalan Lapangan Terbang.
“From there, water flows through Lorong Lapangan Terbang 5, making any obstruction along the route a serious risk for backflow and localised flooding,” he said.
Yap explained that residents had previously highlighted similar drainage problems in 2025, prompting corrective actions that successfully resolved the issue at that time.
However, he said that in November or early December 2025, contractors again laid three steel pipes across the same earth drain.
“This action once more obstructed water flow, prompting fresh complaints from residents and immediate escalation to Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd for urgent intervention,” he added.
During today’s inspection, Sarawak Metro officers briefed Yap on remedial measures being implemented to remove obstructions and restore proper drainage function.
