KUCHING: The final phase of a street lighting project by Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, is expected to be completed soon.

The initiative has already begun to transform night-time safety and confidence in Kota Sentosa.

With 93 per cent of the initiative successfully delivered, the project is on track to enhance visibility, reduce crime risks, and improve quality of life across the constituency.

The RM1-million Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2022 allocation has been strategically utilised across three phases to date, with implementation carried out by Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB).

Phase 1, costing RM71,182, saw installations in Kampung Sungai Tapang, Kampung Stutong, Kampung Lubok Buan, Kampung Stampin Baru, and Kampung Stampin BDC.

The second phase valued at RM237,089, expanded the project to high-traffic areas such as Jalan Sungai Tapang, Jalan Stakan Batu 7, Jalan Liu Shan Bang, Jalan Semaba, Jalan Stampin Baru BDC, Taman Satria Jaya BDC, Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Taman Hui Sing, Jalan Hup Kee, Jalan Stampin Tengah, Jalan Keteh, Jalan Seladah, and Jalan Kempas.

These enhancements have significantly improved pedestrian and vehicular safety across the urban zones.

The third and largest phase, with a budget of RM622,544, targeted military compounds including Army Camp Penrissen, Army Camp Penrissen Lama, Camp Ria, and Camp Sebelas Melayu Semenggo, reflecting a strong focus on the welfare of service personnel and their families.

With RM69,184 remaining from the original allocation, Yap on Wednesday conducted a field inspection with SESCO officers, alongside community leaders, Penghulu Lai Boon Khee and Kapitan Lee Tho Fung.

The team evaluated the final phase of implementation, pinpointing locations such as the T-junction at Jalan Sungai Tapang to address remaining dark spots and pedestrian safety concerns.
