SIBU: A total 12 types of essential goods have been listed as price-controlled goods through the implementation of the Gawai Dayak 2026 Festival Season Maximum Price Scheme for the Sibu Division effective May 27 to June 4.
Head of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sibu Branch, Roslee Maslie said the nine-day scheme aims to ensure consumers can enjoy a supply of essential goods at reasonable prices throughout the Gawai Dayak celebration.
According to him, among the goods involved are live old chickens, chicken wings, buffalo meat imported from India, live pigs (farm only), pork belly, pork meat and lard, garlic from China, round cabbage imported from Indonesia and China (excluding Beijing cabbage), curly dried chillies, coconut seeds (wholesale only), grated coconut (retail only) and coconut milk (retail only).
He said KPDN would conduct continuous monitoring to curb unreasonable price increases by irresponsible traders.
“Action to issue a notice under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 will be taken against any irresponsible party found to increase prices suddenly and significantly,” he said in a statement yesterday (May 26).
He added that strict action would also be taken against traders who failed to comply with the regulations under the scheme.
For the offence of selling price-controlled goods above the maximum price, individuals can be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned for not more than three years or both, while companies can be fined up to RM500,000.
In addition, individuals who fail to put up pink price tags for price-controlled goods can be fined up to RM10,000, while companies can be fined up to RM20,000.
Roslee also reminded traders to comply with the instructions set and practice good business ethics to safeguard the interests of consumers.
At the same time, he stressed that manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers should not increase prices impulsively after the expiry of the scheme’s implementation period.
“The effectiveness of this scheme depends on the cooperation of all parties in playing their respective roles responsibly,” he said.
