KUCHING: KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital marked a historic milestone today as it hosted the National Launch of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, becoming the first private hospital in Sarawak to be officially recognised under the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health), Dr Ismuni Bohari, who represented Deputy Health Minister, Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, officiated the event, which was attended by representatives from MOH, the Nutrition Division, the National Lactation Centre, the Sarawak State Health Department, and healthcare industry partners.

KPJ East Malaysia Regional Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kenny Yeap Kim Pey, expressed appreciation to MOH for entrusting KPJ Kuching with hosting the national-level event, describing the recognition as a significant honour not only for the hospital but also for the entire private healthcare sector in East Malaysia.

“This year’s theme, ‘Prioritise Breastfeeding: Build a Sustainable Support System’, reflects our commitment to strengthening mother-and-baby-centred healthcare practices.

“Breastfeeding is more than just nutrition. It is the most critical early intervention to ensure long-term child health while reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases,” he said.

Dr Yeap said KPJ Kuching’s recognition under BFHI highlights the hospital’s dedication to quality care, and enhances the private sector’s role in supporting the country’s public health agenda.

He added that the achievement reflects the team’s commitment to providing the highest standards of support for mothers and families.

The programme also saw the flag-off of the ‘Jelajah Madani BFHI’ at KPJ Kuching, the starting point for a nationwide tour to all private hospitals recognised under BFHI.

After Kuching, the journey continues to Sabah before moving on to other BFHI-accredited private hospitals across the country.
