KUCHING: KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital has officially opened its neurosurgery and spine clinic, bringing renewed hope to patients battling complex neurological conditions.

This milestone comes with a remarkable achievement — KPJ Kuching has successfully performed its first two deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures, becoming the first private hospital in East Malaysia to offer this advanced and life-changing treatment.

For many patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and essential tremors, the journey to recovery has often meant long travels and uncertainty.

But now, that journey can begin closer to home — with expert care and cutting-edge treatment right here in Sarawak.

DBS is a delicate, high-precision surgery where electrodes are implanted in specific parts of the brain to send electrical signals that help manage the symptoms of movement disorders.

For patients, it can mean regaining control of their lives — tremors eased, mobility improved, and independence restored.

President and managing director of KPJ Healthcare Chin Keat Chyuan said the significance of this moment, calling it a breakthrough for both the hospital and the community.

“This is more than just a medical advancement, I t’s a commitment to change lives. With DBS now available at KPJ Kuching, we’re giving patients and their families renewed hope, closer access to specialised care, and the reassurance that they no longer have to leave their home state for world-class treatment.”

“Our goal is to put patients at the centre of everything we do; from the moment they walk through our doors to the outcomes they take home. This new clinic is a reflection of that promise,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahadhir Alhady Sulaiman, the specialist hospital’s medical director, echoed this sentiment, noting the profound impact this development will have on local communities.

“For many years, specialised treatments like DBS were only available in select parts of the country.

“Today, that changes. Patients in Sarawak and neighbouring regions now have access to some of the most advanced neurosurgical care, without having to uproot their lives or endure long travel.”

Leading the clinic is neurosurgeon Dr. Lau Bik Liang, whose team is dedicated to not only delivering expert care but also walking alongside each patient on their healing journey.

The clinic will also support and complement services offered in public hospitals, ensuring that a broader range of patients — both insured and self-paying — can benefit from its specialised offerings.

As the doors of the neurosurgery and spine clinic open, they signal more than just a new medical facility; they open a path to comfort, dignity, and a better quality of life for those who need it most.
