KUCHING: KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital has successfully completed its 1,111th robotic assisted total knee replacement (TKR).

According to a press statement today, the milestone reflects KPJ Kuching’s leading role within KPJ Healthcare in robotic assisted joint replacement, and follows its recent recognition as Orthopaedic Service Provider of the Year for Asia Pacific 2025 at the GlobalHealth Asia Pacific Awards.

The procedures utilise advanced technologies such as the ROSA Knee System by Zimmer Biomet and the VELYS Robotic Assisted Solution by Johnson & Johnson, which enhance surgical precision, support faster recovery, and improve long-term mobility for patients with chronic knee pain or advanced osteoarthritis.

Chin Keat Chyuan, president and managing director of KPJ Healthcare, said the achievement demonstrates the group’s strong focus on innovation and patient centred care.

“This achievement at KPJ Kuching reflects the strength of our network-wide focus on quality, innovation and subspecialty development.

“Guided by our purpose of Care for Life, we remain committed to expanding access to technology-driven, personalised care across our hospitals,” he said.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Lee Woo Guan, who pioneered robotic knee surgery at KPJ Kuching, highlighted the real life impact of the technology.

“Each knee represents a person regaining their ability to move confidently and live independently.

“Robotic technology like ROSA and VELYS has helped us personalise each procedure with greater precision and consistency, which directly translates into better outcomes and faster recovery for our patients,” he said.

The hospital’s robotic assisted surgery programme has led to lower complication rates, shorter hospital stays, and higher patient satisfaction, with more patients opting for robotic procedures as part of their care journey.

KPJ Healthcare stated that it will continue investing in robotic technology, clinical leadership and subspecialty services as part of its transformation strategy, which aims to integrate care delivery, education and research while raising the overall standard of healthcare across Malaysia.
