KUCHING: The RM112.9 million Kuching International Airport (KIA) Southern Access Road Project is on track to be completed by September.
This was confirmed by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi during a working visit to the project site here today (Aug 2).
Spanning 7.9 kilometres, the project is designed to provide a vital alternative route to ease traffic congestion along Samarahan Road and improve overall connectivity in the southern part of Kuching.
“This road will serve as an alternative route to help reduce congestion along the Samarahan Road,” said Nanta.
He said the project has reached 96 per cent completion, with remaining works focused on the installation of road furniture and streetlights.
“Based on current progress and on-site observations, we are confident the project will be completed on schedule and meet quality standards,” he added.
The project involves the construction of four main roads, namely Road A, Road B, Road C and Road D, along with three reinforced concrete bridges and an underpass.
Road A comprises a four-lane dual carriageway spanning one kilometre from the Stutong T-junction to the Stampin T-junction, and a 5.2-kilometre two-lane dual carriageway from Stampin to the Bukit Berangan T-junction, with all sections constructed to Public Works Department (PWD) standards.
Road B is a newly constructed two-lane dual carriageway measuring 1.7 kilometres, connecting the Stampin T-junction to the Sungai Tapang T-junction.
Road C links the Stampin T-junction to the Sungai Tapang T-junction and is integrated with Road D as part of the internal connection system, while the project also includes upgrading the existing Stutong T-junction to improve traffic flow.
In addition, three reinforced concrete bridges crossing the Kuap River, Stampin River and Sangkoh River have already been completed.
A major component of the project is the construction of a dedicated underpass designed to streamline traffic movement across the Kuching International Airport zone.
Earthworks for the project are also well underway and form part of the overall development scope.
Once completed, the access road is expected to enhance traffic circulation, reduce bottlenecks, and support future growth in the rapidly developing Samarahan division.
