KUCHING: More than a thousand people gathered at Padang Merdeka here yesterday (April 20) to not only embrace a healthy lifestyle but also celebrate the spirit of Hari Raya Aidilfitri together, in festive attire.

Kuching Car Free Morning, held on the first and third Sunday of every month, is known for promoting fitness and environmental awareness.
This time, however, the organisers introduced a festive twist in celebration of Hari Raya, marking the first time participants were encouraged to wear their Hari Raya attire (baju raya).

In conjunction with the celebrations, the streets were filled not just with runners and cyclists, but also with vibrant baju raya, bringing a cultural and communal feel to the usually fitness-focused event.
In return, the city witnessed a colourful tapestry of people from all walks of life, including visitors from as far as Kuala Lumpur.
Among them was Iman Rizqy, who recently returned here to celebrate Hari Raya after nine years.
This marked his first time experiencing Kuching Car Free Morning.
“In Kuala Lumpur, it’s more intense, but here, the togetherness is what stands out.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. Celebrating Hari Raya while being active is absolutely fun and different,” he said.
Indeed, this fusion of tradition and health advocacy resonated with many.
Haffiz, a member of the running group DAYBREAK247, believes events like these are excellent gateways for individuals hoping to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“This is a great platform for anyone thinking of starting their fitness journey. The festive theme makes it less intimidating and more engaging,” he said.
DAYBREAK247 is known for its inclusive approach to running, offering tips, motivation and community support to beginners and regulars alike.
The group frequently participates in Kuching Car Free Morning, and can be found on social media at @DAYBREAK247.
On top of that, cycling enthusiast, Azfahrijan Aznan, better known as Omkuhh from Mensia BMX Club, praised the joyful mix of celebration and movement.
“If more events like this were held regularly, Kuching would be even more exciting. We’re celebrating Hari Raya while riding BMX bikes in our traditional outfits.
“With so many ethnicities in Sarawak, I hope similar themes can be carried out for Gawai Dayak, Chinese New Year and other cultural festivities,” he said.

Additionally, the sense of togetherness was equally felt by Sharifah Suselawati and her cousin, Sharifah Noorashitah, who said they were thrilled to be part of something that integrates fitness with festive joy.
“This kind of event brings people from every walk of life together. I hope it becomes a tradition,” she said.
A definite crowd-puller yesterday morning was the Z Dance Club, whose group was invited to bring life to the event for the first time.
Known for their high energy, Z Dance delivered a show-stopping debut performance.
“We’re happy to be part of this, and are open to more collaborations in future.
“It’s a great way to promote happiness and health,” said Norlia Asek, a member of Z Dance.
Kuching Car Free Morning has transformed into more than just a fitness initiative.
It has become a vibrant celebration of unity, culture and wellbeing.
By blending festive traditions with active living, the event not only fostered a deeper sense of community but also set a meaningful precedent for future celebrations.
