KUCHING: Sarawak football fans have reason to celebrate as Kuching City FC continue to earn statewide pride, with thousands of supporters turning up to back the team and affirming their rise as the state’s new flag-bearer.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said Kuching City’s strong showing against Malaysia’s top-tier teams demonstrated how far they have progressed despite a Malaysia Cup semi-final second leg 2-0 defeat to giants Johor Darul Ta’zim or better known as JDT.
“JDT are a team above all the others. Kuching City are still new, but even within a short period of time, they have been able to prove themselves. This is what gives us pride,” he said, speaking at a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
Abdul Karim noted that thousands of spectators turned up when Kuching City played, calling it a reflection of growing statewide support.
“They have brought up not only the fans of Kuching but the whole of Sarawak. People are looking at Kuching City as the flag-bearer for Sarawak. That is the beautiful part,” he enthused.
He hoped that the team can sustain their momentum in the Malaysian Super League campaign.
