VIENNA, Austria: Kuching is looking to Vienna for inspiration in tackling climate challenges and building a greener future, as both Kuching City mayors explore best practices in urban sustainability during a visit to the Austrian capital.

Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Datuk Wee Hong Seng, and Mayor of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Datuk Hilmy Othman, expressed strong interest in Vienna’s flood mitigation system and waste-to-energy initiatives, two areas where the European city is seen as a global leader.

Their insights were gained during a courtesy call on Malaysia’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organisations in Vienna, Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim, held in conjunction with their participation in the World Cities Summit (WCS) Mayors Forum.

“We are particularly impressed by how Vienna turns municipal waste into energy for over 50,000 households.

“This is something Kuching can learn from as we push towards a circular economy,” said the mayors in a joint statement.

The flood prevention infrastructure in Vienna was also highlighted as a model of long-term planning in response to climate risks, something Kuching aims to replicate in its own local context.

Both mayors thanked Ikram for the fruitful engagement and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening international ties that support Kuching’s transformation into a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable city.
